Secrets of my Success: Research in Motion founder and co-CEO Mike Lazaridis
I. Only Take Smart Risks:
Don’t believe what they say about entrepreneurs being huge risk-takers. The successful ones don’t like taking risks. But it often doesn’t look that way, because you don’t see the amount of planning and research and analysis they undertake to make a decision, an investment, or entry into an industry.
II. Do One Thing Really Well:
We have a singular vision. It’s just Blackberry. We’re not distracted by any other diversificiation. Some people would say that’s a weakness. But judging by the growth of smart-phones today, I’d say we’ve pretty well nailed that trend.
III. Level the Field:
We try to keep it as egalitarian as we can at RIM. When you look at the type of meetings and the kind of committees we have here, it doesn’t really matter what your position is. You may have interns exchanging ideas with top executives. What matters is what you’re doing and the contribution you’re making.
